In this installment of Class Notes, I will be going over some tips that will help you promote your new book. The information below will be from a section from Poet’s Market 2017 titled “6 Ways To Promote Your New Book” by Jeannine Hall Gailey. Click here if you missed the last Class Notes.
Tip #1: Start Local
If you haven’t already, make sure to get involved in your local writing community. Reach out to new and established writers. Join any online groups or book clubs in your city that interest you. Go to poetry events, art exhibits, or local concerts and interact with like-minded individuals.
Don’t neglect the benefits of having a local buzz. Jeannine Hall Gailey states that “it’s easier to sell your book of poetry in your hometown, at a reading full of friends and family, than it will be to sell it to strangers and students you’ve never met before.” So rather than stress over followers and social media algorithms, start sharing your work with people that you see in your everyday life.
Tip #2: Support Other Writers
Although it’s tempting to remain selfish, remember that there are other writers who need support as well. One retweet, share, or encouraging comment will establish genuine connections with potential fans and buyers. Writers don’t thrive in a vacuum. So be generous with your time and platform.
Tip #3: Book Announcements
As long as you handle it with caution and grace, there is nothing wrong with shouting the release of your book from the rooftops. It’s important to be both creative and consistent.
A simple way to start announcing your book is by emailing your closest friends, family, and colleagues. Effective marketing involves being personal, persistent, and professional. Gailey suggests being “friendly, respectful, and direct” and to include ” a direct link to buy your new book.” It’s also best to include a visually appealing image that is sharable on social media.
Tip #4: Social Media
Without a social media presences, your book is better off collecting dust or remaining on your hard drive. While being a social media expert may be beneficial, it’s not necessarily required.
If you haven’t already, start a blog or a writer website (WordPress is a good place to start). Once you set everything up, your blog or website will act as a hub in which all your social media will point back to.
When it comes to promoting on social media, Digital Marketing and Social Media Strategist Catherine Trestini offer the following advice:
- “Make a good impression.”
- “Remember to post different and new things about your book.”
- “Use your wit, empathy, and brainy attitude.”
- “Only write what you would want to read.”
Tip #5: Physical Promotional Material
In this digital age, it’s easy to disregard physical forms of promotion. But to set yourself apart from the rest, try sending something handmade. This can be a postcard, bookmark, magnet, or sticker. Simply sending files to someone can feel dull and mechanical. But a physical object that a reader can touch will provide a sense of authenticity that will make your book more memorable.
Tip #6: Perform Your Book
Whether it’s public readings, book tours, or book release parties, be sure to celebrate your book release by performing it live. Since this is your moment, feel free to let loose and share your excitement. Recite your favorite parts, explain the process, or give interesting tidbits that will fascinate the audience. But at the same time, be willing to listen and socialize with your readers. Show your appreciation for those who cheered you on from the beginning and the ones who were willing to give your work a chance.
